I like Instagram as I find it fab for inspiration, oh and looking at cats of course!
I came across Sarah who owns Necia’s Hairstyling and followed her straightaway! She styles hair in lots of different vintage styles, and her style is fabulous and flawless! So I asked her if she would be interviewed for the blog and I was delighted when she said yes.
When did your passion for styling in vintage start?
My passion for styling vintage came from being brought up on watching old movies, like Singing in the Rain, Some Like it Hot, Calamity Jane and so on. My grandad was a big influence on me and my sister growing up. It wasn’t just the movies it was also the music.. Glenn Miller and the Andrew Sisters.

If you could pick one person from the past that inspires your style who would it be?
The one person from the past I would pick that inspires me would be…. Argh this is too hard… I can’t just choose one.. Jane Russell.. She was so romantic and dreamy, her luscious black hair, I love trying to create her styles.. There’s too many.. The Andrew sisters too… Too many people.
You always look like you take alot of care and time in achieving your look, do you have any tips you would like to share?
I do take pride in my appearance I think a lady should always make at least a bit of effort. I enjoy doing my hair everyday, I enjoy being a lady.. It doesn’t take me a long time either, even if you just put a little bit of lipstick on.. I think it makes you feel a million dollars too, and if you can’t be bothered to do your hair, just put a hair scarf on!

I love your pictures on Instagram and Facebook, they are very inspiring – do you have any favourite instagram accounts that inspire you?
Inspiration instagrammers…. First one.. More Dolly than Mixture my very own sister, with her amazing blonde hair, she can pull any style off and look timeless… Vintage Vessel I think she’s got super cute style, she rules of a late 1960s look. Mike will cut you he’s a very dapper gent, me and my husband both admire his style.
Do you have a favourite hairstyle you like to recreate the most?
My favourite hair style… It changes all the time, at the moment I like my 1930s middle parting brush out set – A Hedy Lamarr style, she’s so dreamy.
Necia4What inspired you to start Necias Hairstyling as a business?
I did my hairdressing a long while ago when I was 16. I kind of fell out of love with it because I couldn’t find anywhere to work where I could use my own flare. I’ve always done my own hair and friends. My husband has been saying for ages that I should start it up again, because it’s such a passion of mine. So, I did and I’m loving it. Part time I work at the hospital too with dementia patients and I do their hair on the ward, so they have been a influence too.
Necia6What’s your favourite method for setting your hair, I have really thick hair and find pin curls work the best for me.
My favourite method of setting hair is… I also have very thick hair, I couldn’t ever use curling tongs it would just fall out. So I wash my hair and then half dry it, I then use moose on the ends of my hair pin curl, set and sleep. I always set my hair and sleep in it. I have got a hood dryer I use with my clients, but I prefer to sleep in mine.
When you’re styling people’s hair, is there one specific style that people always ask for?
When styling peoples hair, there’s not really a style. I do have people asking for victory rolls, but to be honest the clients put their trust in my hands and I go for it.

If you could only wear your hair in one style for a month, which style would you choose and why?
If I could wear my hair in a style for one month it would be the poodle, it’s versatile I can wear it with a vintage clip or wear it with a hair scarf. It’s great for any occasion. I had a poodle hair do on my wedding day.
Necia8You have to choose 5 items to achieve your perfect coiffed hairstyle – what would they be?
For the perfect brush out or poodle, my 5 items would be:
1. Pin curl clips
2. Moose
3. Hairspray
4. Denman brush
5.Hair grips
Finally, what are your aspirations for the next 12 months?
My aspirations for the coming months are… People coming to my house and to my dedicated work station, and grasping an old time experience, while listening to some Glenn Miller on my gramophone. Seeing how me and my husband live and enjoying the simple things. Looking at old photographs, being under the hood dryer.. I just want people to enjoy it.
